The Treasure Cave

Map

One of only three visitable caves of marine origin known in the world, unique in Europe and of great scientific, historical, and cultural interest due to the discovery of cave paintings and archaeological remains that are preserved in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid and in the Customs Museum in Malaga.

Its galleries were formed below the water level by currents and salt water dissolving the limestone. Later, when sea levels went down, the Cantal area emerged to the surface and with it, the different hollows and caves.

Remains of Neolithic ceramics and objects from the flint lithic industry have been found, as well as human and animal remains.

The Cueva del Tesoro or Cueva del Higuerón is also known for the legend of a treasure hidden there during the Andalusian period.
